Mount Benson Wine Region
The Mount Benson Wine Region is situated between the coastal townships of Kingston and Robe in the South East of South Australia, also known as the Limestone Coast, approximately 320kms South of Adelaide.
The Mount Benson Wine Region forms one part of the Limestone Coast Wine Region that incorporates sub-regions including Coonawarra, Padthaway and Wrattonbully.
The location of Mount Benson ensures that grapes are matured in a cool climate favorable to a lengthy ripening period, matched with terra rossa soil; give an overall distinctive character that ensures these local vines make some award winning wines.
The altitude sits between 50-150 metres with some vineyards located as close as 2kms to the ocean. The growing season ranges through October to April and averages 7.6 hours of daily sunshine. Annual rainfall averages at 25 inches (634mm), while the mean January temperature falls between 18-19 degrees Celsius.
The first vines to enter the ground at Mount Benson were 2 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon planted by retired cray fisherman Bill Wehl, and his wife Margaret, after they noticed the similar conditions of the Coonawarra region, where much success had been achieved with vineyards, to the Mount Benson region. Currently, over 500 hectares of vines cover the Wehls property with several local landowners catching on to the concept and diversifying from grazing and grain crop production, along with major local and overseas wine companies and local small winemakers.
While the Mount Benson Wine Region is relatively new, many vineyards are now reaching the maturing stage with evidence showing a number of varieties have the potential to become 'signature' varieties for the region.
